A cut is one recording of a composition, made by one lineup on one day. It is not the composition — a tune can be cut twice with different players — and it is not the record, because the same cut can appear on more than one, and plenty of cuts appear on none.^[unverified]

Identified by block height and studio because those are always disambiguating and need nobody to agree on what to call a session. Where a cut carries the name of a record instead, that is a placeholder: it cannot be shared with a second record, which is the one thing a cut identifier exists to do.^[unverified]
